A REVOLUTIONARY READING
ABOUT THE SHOW
This play was written in 1941 Germany, but wasn't performed until 1958 (two years after Brecht's sudden death from a heart attack at age 58), due to the provocative nature of the content. It's a satirical allegory ostensibly telling the story of a gangster, Arturo Ui, as he seizes control of the vegetable trade in Chicago and Cicero, Illinois, during the Great Depression. Each of the play's characters has a parallel in history -- and some might say the present, as well.
ROLES (CASTING)
Cast size: 8 ACTORS
The original play calls for over 20 distinct speaking parts, but each of our players will be filling more than one role. We're looking to cast eight actors, no restrictions as to age or gender. This will be your chance to display a range of character portrayals - what thespian bliss!
Actors will be reading from an adapted/abbreviated script, seated on a simple wooden stool, each with their own hatrack placed behind them, which will hold various hats and props to be used to distinguish between characters. The only costume will be black pants or trousers and black long-sleeved shirts. We will have visual and sound effects and lighting cues to fill in the imagination gaps that a "sit-down-reading" cannot provide. After the final bows, the director will invite the audience to participate in a question and answer period in hopes of engaging the audience in the subject matter, the participation in which will be optional for the actors.
